Dayton, Ohio

Dayton is located in southwestern Ohio. It is the county seat and largest city in Montgomery County. The Dayton Ohio - Greater Dayton, including Vandalia, Clayton, Englewood, Oakwood, Bellbrook, Trotwood, Kettering, Piqua, Tipp City, Centerville, Beavercreek, Fairborn, West Carrollton, Huber Heights, Troy, Riverside, and Miamisburg.Dayton metropolitan area, or Greater Dayton, includes the communities of Vandalia, Clayton, Englewood, Oakwood, Bellbrook, Trotwood, Kettering, Tipp City, Centerville, Beavercreek, Fairborn, West Carrollton, Huber Heights, Troy, Riverside, and Miamisburg. Dayton is situated within the Miami Valley region of Ohio, just north of Cincinnati.

Dayton was founded on April 1, 1796 seven years before Ohio was admitted to the Union. The town was incorporated in 1805 and given its name after Jonathan Dayton, a captain in the American Revolutionary War and signatory of the U.S. Constitution.

The Miami and Erie Canal, built in the 1830’s, connected the Dayton commerce from Lake Erie via the Great Miami River. The catastrophic Great Dayton Flood of 1913 severely affected much of the city. People began moving to suburban communities further from the river and on higher ground. The Miami Conservancy District was established in 1914. The high waters damaged some of the Wright Brothers’ glass photographic negatives of their glider flights at Kitty Hawk and power flights over Huffman Prairie near Dayton.

Dayton has nine historic neighborhoods

Oregon District, Wright Dunbar, Dayton View, Grafton Hill, McPherson Town, Webster Station, Huffman, St. Anne’s Hill, and South Park – featuring mainly single-family houses and mansions in the Neoclassical, Jacobethan, Tudor, Revival, English Gothic, Chateauesque, Craftsman, Queen Anne, Georgian Revival, Colonial Revival, and Renaissance Revival Architecture.

Dayton is home to the Dayton Art Institute, Sun Watch Indian Village/Archaeological Park, Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, and the historic Victoria Theatre. In addition Dayton has Philharmonic and Opera performances and the Gem City Ballet and Progressive Dance Theater.
